View Full Version : Online Poker Strategies

Thought I would start up this thread to ask everyone if they have any online poker strategies. I for one have seen many of the big guns online playing hard core poker games using things like the clock in their favor. I myself have used this strategy on numerous occasions finding sometimes successful and sometimes not. A good example would be one day when I had an unbeatable full house. I copped a fairly big raise and used my time bank to drag out as much money from my opponent as I could. In the last couple of seconds I called his/her bet. The river card dropped and in thier mind was useless to me. In an attempt to try and push me out of the pot (as I showed extreme weakness using all my time) They went all in. I must say I made and immediate call and it was one of the most profitable hands I ever played.
What are the benefits (excluding the obvious as stated above) of using the time clock? How many other ways can it be used? Are there any other online tells to get an advantage over opponents? Obviously wisely using software, databases and charts gains you an advantage. If you were to have none of these benefits ..... what tells would you look for ?

Ive found that alot of players will call a bet on the flops quickly with a weak hand but take more time with a strong hand like top pair in heads up no limit holdem. Personally I try to keep my timing as random as possible because i think thats more deceptive.

I think mustardeggs is right about making timing random. I try not to care about other players timing unless I believe I've spotted a pattern.
In general I believe in acting random - that also goes for bets and raises. I have no doubt that my best pokerdays are the ones when I concentrate on being unpredictable.

try to think 1 or 2 steps ahead, this way u dont have to think about every decision and avoid giving up timing tells.

So from what I have read so far, there are sort of no other online tells ??? There is the time clock and the predictability / unpredictability of use of the time clock. Obviously watching for patterns also which the poker software sort of does and thats about it :( hmmmm. Much harder it seems then playing live !!!

The following text exclusively concerns online poker, NOT live poker.
I tried taking a lot of time with a big hand once. My opponent bet the flop and I called. Then he bet the turn and I raised. He instafolded, saying: "Act some more, noob". I am convinced he made a big laydown. I think you are better off keeping it random and not put too much energy into tells and into misleading your opponents. I think tells are overestimated. I like taking a much more mathematical approach to the game. However, i still pay attention to obvious pattherns, and i still pay attention to how loose/tight/passive/aggresive a player is.
You should still, of cause, pay attention to your own way of playing different hands. Don't bet in pattherns. I try to keep the time I spend making my decision as random as possible.

I can follow Buldermar in a long way, it sounds very like my "style". I don't give the "time counter" much attention. Sometimes it's a pain in a special place, when a player wait to the very last second - and then fold. I think it's much more important to play your position, and with the right cards - you win (hopefully)

So avoiding patterns seems to be a big thing. I will endeavor to keep a close eye on what I do !!! :) :) :) Thanks !!! From now on I will be making myself a lot more unpredictable. ;)

when a player wait to the very last second - and then fold. (hopefully)
this is interesting, if you see this you can make the case that when he does this on the flop or turn your chances of a successfull bluff on a street later have gotten better

I was faced with a player who when caught in a difficult bluff situation (I assume bluff) he kept letting the clock run out on raises which folded his hand. He then sat straight back in. This I guess is a tell but not much of a help if someone is leading out :( . I guess a tactic that can be used in the case he did lead out is re-raise if there was uncertainty, hope that he is indeed bluffing again ??? ;)

a small online tell at the cash tabel, is have many tabels a player is playing... if a player is playing 15 tabels, he has a lot of money... and he is stealing the blinds at the botten :) ( som times ) and playing a lot of good hands, he have to auto folde a lot of bad, besours of the many tabels open... and he cant not have the time to get the biggest reads on you, and the other playes at the tabel. (have to be a littel automatic)
a player only playing 1 tabel is more there, he ses your play, se your cards, and playing cards in another wey i think, and so on...( and dont wanner lose his mony, or must likely nye/1 timer... :) ther is a lot of things to think about and et gets me in the game an koncentrate on the game and the players ther.... it is alwayes my 1 read....
:) sorry for my bad english....

I like to try to tilt people on cash..play donkey for a half hour! Call alot but keep pots low..so not to bust yourself but be fishy! lol there will nearly always be someone at the table who gets wound up and starts to play erratically ;) .. then tighten up! Watch em weep hehe

Your mean Slinky lmao, Nice tactic though !!! I played like a moron yesterday only to come out a winner. Sometimes it pays to be a donkey. You are right in what you say hehe :D The table typing at me telling me I was a donkey, before you knew it I had won back what I lost the day before :) They assumed I was playing like a donkey still ;) I had removed emotions however and started to play normally. (Never play when emotional :p lol). They tilted I am sure. Never thought of it as a tactic or strategy, but quite a good one actually :)

Are using multi coloured cards helpful Slinky? I have never tried them, I originally changed the deck colour and freaked ....changed straight back. I have just been using the plain deck. Does it make a difference and for the better? Or is it just preference ?

I've tried using multicolours at a time when playing at a site were the cards didn't have very good graphics. But I never got used to that - it's not natural. Almost aginst the laws of physics.
Now I've just bought a pair of glasses.
