ive been struggling a little with this concept. the only time i over bet is when i know i have my oppenent and im 110% sure they will call. but other then that are there any good times to over bet?

i like to use it for bluffing when i am pretty sure my opponent doesnt have a monster. if i for instance have a missed straight draw on the river and the flush came and i think my opponent has a single pair hand i will overbet and try to rep the flush.

is it ever a good idea to over bet if you know your opponent is on a draw?

if you are 100 percent sure that he is on a draw dont you want him to call when you can fold if his draw comes or let him bluff if his draw misses?

not really no. I mean how do you know if your opponent has draw? You can suspect yes but now what draw does he have? Weak tp and a flushdraw? btm end of an open ended straight draw or a bare gutshot?

hmm, i dont like this, youre opponent might have a flush and you really have to overbet ur flushes there also.

I use overbetting only if I think I might trick my opponent into calling by making him wonder why I would overbet I would want to be paid off.

Overbetting is really very situational.

Most people indeed use it for bluffing while it is actually much better to only make it with ur big hands, not always with ur big hands but when u do it do it with a big hand.

i only do it when i think that its the only way that they will fold and when i think there range is filled with more marginal hands rather than big hands where i think it will be plus ev. im also not shoving 5x pot ill do it like 1.25 or 1.5 times pot where if im folding out 80 percent of there range it will be hugely plus ev. It also allows me to do it in similar spots later when i have big hands. ill normally do my first few overbets as bluffs then i will shift over to using them for value especially if i have been caught. I also play stakes where people always interpret an overbet as the nuts until they see otherwise.

i only over bet when i have the nuts and im sure my opponent is comited 90% of the time :s

so basically never over bet... that fine just curious, like to know what the pros think of overbetting and if there are ever good situations to do so. if you can think of any strategies where over betting is a good play im happy to read it

cheers guys (and gal ;) ttys)

sure if you know they wont fold.

in the smallish stakes live cash games you play in i would probably only do this with the nuts versus people who are too dumb to pay attention to how much you bet or too dumb to fold top pair+

it also works good as a bluff in certain situations and if you are playing against smart opponents you have to mix in some bluffs or they wont ever call you when you have the nuts...but i dont think this is a good idea to do in the games you are playing in. however the right person to do it against would be a nit who you know has top pair, and they thought for a long time on your turn bet and finally called you. if you have a double pot sized bet left on the river and you missed your draw or something or a draw got their and you dont think he's on one, you can stick it in and force him to fold. this is dangerous though so use with extreme caution.

i'm a big fan of overbetting but it has to be done right or you will get hurt and/or lose a lot of value by doing it too much/in the wrong situations

The only time i tend to over bet is in a situation when, for example, you flop 2 pair however the flop is 3 suited cards. Overbetting is the right play because you are almost guaranteed to have the best hand however by betting smaller you may price in opponents looking for another card to complete a flush. By overbetting you essentially make it financial suicide for your opponent to call on a one card flush draw.
