Hi slinky, ive read my fair share of books i try to make a list but only a few of them contain no Limit holdem material and no omahaha, sorry

- winning in small stakes holdem games ( sklansky )
- winning i tough holdem games (stoxtrader)
- Zen the art of poker
- your worst poker enemy
- low limit holdem
- weighing the odds in holdem poker

those I remember reading completely and all of them i can recommend for certain playrs, I own a few more wich I didnt read yet including " the mathematics of poker wich is one of the best books in poker "

youre a re propably looking for little green book and/or harrington on cashgames.

btw Ive also read Ace on the River by barry greenstein, very entertaining book! Highly recommended

As we are upgrading the site during the next month we will also have a review section for
books ;)

youre a girl? wow already 3 I think, thats a pretty sick ratio for a pokerforum ;)

I guess you will really enjoy Ace on the River as it covers a lot of stuff, is very coloured and entertaining. Definetly a good read :)

The Theory of Poker was the book that turned me into a winning player, more than any other. Its a great book that teaches you how to think about the game like a professional.

Fooled By Randomness by Taleb is a great non-poker book which has many applications to how to think about poker, investing and life situations. Ace on the River by Barry G is also good for this stuff. I didn't learn a lot about how to play Aces from that book, but I learned a whole lot about what it takes to be a pro.

Super System was also a great starter book for me, but I think it is a bit outdated now.

Harrington on Hold Em 1 and 2 are perfect for tournament poker, along with the a bit outdated Tournaments Poker for Advanced Players book.

I've been playing poker now for 3 years odd..and only became a winning player about a year ago lol but i had a good roll going on prima network then the skin i played on (boyles) moved to ipoker and my god what a nose dive my game took :( AA KK QQ etc.. AK AQ AJ all the top hands are useless on that site and although i do play a very varied cash game i just couldnt adjust to the style on there..The fishiest EVER!!! IMO the RNG is naffed on ipoker and also i dont think you should have to adjust your style to suit a site.. therefore thats why i want to read up some about pro's to see if i can find out where i went wrong and ended up from a 4 figure some to a big fat zero lol :(

I've just deposited on titan and will give ipoker the benefit of the doubt even if it doesnt deserve it lol good luck me :)

well iam playing on ipoker and had some huge variance this month [ see in bb&w thread ] but overall iam a big winner, it happens on every site. Also you have to adjust your style every time if youre not playing the same opponents even the same opponents change their game and you eventually have to adjust.

patrick Antonius, ya I agree he looks good :p

The sexiest poker player lmao, how on earth did this discussion start..... I have to say I do not think that Gus is sexy I agree with Slinky, he is not the best looking !!!

As for books, I have mainly a library consisting of mathematical ones such as the one mentioned above "The mathematics of poker", (assuming it is written by Bill Chen and Jerrod Ankenman.) Out of all of the mathematical books I have come accross it definetly is the clearest. I have another which I can not find at the moment which is all black and is also mathematics .... it however is page after page after page of equations only and made me almost ill lol.
Of all the read books I cant wait to play some tourneys with you guys as I think experience is the key to being a great player. Certainly I am in need of more lol :P

Slinky
10-21-2008, 11:47 PM

Danielle Angel
10-22-2008, 06:11 AM
OMG !!!! hahaha, delete delete, delete that pic !!!! All of them lmao. When comparing these men you would have to stick with the mentioned, Gus, Antonio.... Jimmy Frickle ???? I guess my grandma of 80 years who is half blind could think he is sexy :D. Soooo can we check out the men behind the masks on here. Maybe the sexiest poker players on the playr.com forum hehe. (Heres hoping that none of the guys on here are Jimmy Frickle now I have said that !!!!!)

Yes the book boggled my mind, WD.... It is a matter of re-reading paragraphs which dont sink in. Thankfully my background being Business Accounting and Information Technology the mathematics sinks in pretty well. I know I have friends who read a couple of pages and said "NO WAY !!!!"

In regards to re-reading those paragraphs, you have pushed me to re read this book again. Although I obviously have picked up knowledge which automatically has sunk in, there is always more which you miss with books like this. Although if you ensure you have "the key concepts" before continuing on I think you pretty much get it ..... Looks like I have myself some more bedtime reading to refresh and ensure I am up to speed !!! :( I seem to be getting worse at poker not better lmao

mustardeggs

regarding the book, its basiclly that iam a math idiot at the first pages i looked at the formulas and tried to understand them but I couldnt

Just go to your local amazon.com, they have all pokerbooks and youll recieve them very quickly.

Good look at the library anyway :D

Slinky
10-22-2008, 11:53 AM

I'll get me to amazon right away

Danielle Angel
10-22-2008, 12:29 PM
She really plays on Titan ?? Are you serious ?? Damn she is hot !!! (I am not a batter for the other team either btw, but you have to give credit where credit is due) I am on the search for a hot poker player !!! A male of course lol

As for the book that appears to be outdated slinky. You may find it useful (if it is at a bargain price) for tips reading people in live tournament / cash play. Most of these books were based on tells, general poker plays etc etc. If you dont play live poker however YES it would be useless and outdated.

Danielle Angel
10-22-2008, 02:53 PM
I have just been informed of a book or series even .... called .... Super Systems 1,2,3 written by Mike Caro. Has anyone read them or this ? Is it worthwhile adding them to my library?

Speaking of libraries and books>>> It can become very expensive getting a collection of good poker reading together. Is there some way "WE" can all book share ? Of course we can share reviews but what I mean is have a library borrowing system between members. E.g, I send you "the Mathematics of Poker" by post and you send "Super Systems 1,2,3". I have no idea exactly how this could ever be structured I do know it is less then $10AUD to post to Denmark, USA and England ($20 return). All in all, much cheaper then us all spending hundreds of dollars. Any ideas on how this could work or anyone even interested ?? :)

Slinky
10-22-2008, 04:55 PM
Well thats a very kind suggestion danielle but unfortunately i dont own any poker books yet :( but soon as i buy some and have done with them i'd be more than happy to send them on to someone else that would benefit from them :)

Also could someone please tell me what supersystem is about ??
Is it all aspects of the game or certain areas??:D

Degen
10-23-2008, 12:20 AM
SuperSystem is a strategy guide for basically every form of poker: Hold Em, Omaha, Stud etc. It was written, or rather organized, by Doyle Brunson. Each chapter is about one form of poker and written by an expert in that game. It is a solid primer for Hold Em (and I'm sure the other games) as far as starting hands and general strategy. As it was written a generation ago and the game has changed a lot (the last few years particularly), some of the content is a bit outdated. It is however an excellent choice for your first poker book.

Slinky
10-23-2008, 01:09 AM
Ah thankyou WD i'll see if i can get my hands on a copy..Outdated or not my game can only improve :)

For some reason I wanted to learn by myself....the only poker book I have started reading is Gus' - Every Hand Revealed, haven't finished reading it yet though....not that I don't like the book....because I have only read up to half way of day 2....and it has been helpful, even if just to compare his game to all the mistakes I'm making :p

The problem is that I'm a big Gus fan :o and I must say reading his words makes me see little red hearts all around :o ...so I can't read it :o
What can I say?...Gus is too sexy lol

Back to the book topic .... There is a book titled Poker on The Internet. I was just about to purchase this and thought I would look for some reviews. It is not advised by me for anyone to buy it.
The author is Andrew Kinsman. The title gives you some hope that this is the literary offering that will help you become successful when playing using electronic media. These hopes are quickly dashed when you open the book and begin reading according to reviews !!!

It apparently shows you how to sign up on the net. Pushes you towards certain sites and tells you nothing you probably don't already know.

If anyone knows of a great on line strategy book. Or related to increasing online playing ability please let me know.

Degen
10-29-2008, 05:29 AM
Never heard of the author and it sounds like an Internet Poker for Dummies kind of book. I would skip it. There is no fundamental difference between playing poker online as opposed to playing it live. You just need to learn basic poker theory. Things like physical tells obviously don't matter online but the game still has the same rules and the same strategy. This is the reason so many internet players have been able to crush live tournaments even though they have played little or no live poker.

As a first poker book I would high recommend The Theory of Poker.

Danielle Angel
10-30-2008, 10:30 PM
After reviewing information on the site, it seems my "online" book requirements are being pretty well covered anyway. I was looking for a book showing online strategy, things like retrieving money from your accounts which I still have not done :( etc etc. I am going to start a thread in the strategy section for things like online tells to both give and gain information. I will look up that book and endeavor to purchase. Thankyou. :)

Ok, we have talked books and will continue to do so, however... what about magazines. Are all of these expensive poker magazines on the market worth the effort of buying ? They have loads of tips and strategies but in saying this I assume that each month EVERYONE who buys the magazines will be trying the same new tactics lol :). Should we all be investing in mags ?

Slinky
11-05-2008, 09:33 PM
I used to subscribe to one.. it was so interesting i forget what it was called ha ... crap!!!!!!!!!

mustardeggs
11-05-2008, 09:47 PM
I dont read any mags but I think they feature articles and interviews with pretty good playrs so its always worth reading imo.

And if EVERYONE would use this tactics and applies them correctly wich is definetly not the case you should do the same if you dont want to fall behind.

I have the super system 1 and 2, and must say they are very alike. A lot of the same stuff in them. But well. Great book and helped me a lot overall. But it is really heavy to get through i think. Other than that i prefer to read my advises on forums etc. actually. Like in here. I love peoples advices. Now i just need to deposit 50 bucks on some site again and keep grinding till i hit the tables where mustard plays :D

Norwegian Veronika Larsen is a former rep for Betsson who chucked her day job to become a pro poker player in Europe.

Sexy, hot or not.

Females has a small lead in poker. They have a pair, sometimes a big pair.
But males have the nuts.

And then it becomes how, and by whom they are represented.

As you probably all know the super system set can be purchased separately. Froedo mentions below that they seem to contain the same things. Which of the 3 does everyone suggest is the best for me to buy first. Which has the most knowledge on NL Texas Holdem. In addition ....anyone that has read all 3, is it a follow on do I really need to start with number 1.

The books will actually be an xmas gift for my b/f :p He however is a slow reader so I will make sure I get into it fast and before him :D lmao ... now heres hoping he doesnt read this thread

the first one is 20 years old. if the first and second have the same type of content i would get the 2nd, as it is much more recent.

i haven't read 2 or 3 though. i can say that 1 is an excellent poker book.

Froedo

Here's the table of contents from each book

SS1

Draw Poker by Mike Caro. It's Jacks or better to open, with a Joker.
Seven Card Stud by Chip Reese.
Lowball by Joey Hawthorne. Mainly about A-5 with a Joker, but also NL 2-7 and Razz.
Seven Card Stud High-Low Split by David Sklansky. There's no qualifier (like "Eight or better") for Low.
Limit Hold'em by Bobby Baldwin. Played with one blind and antes.
No Limit Hold'em by Doyle Brunson.

SS2

Limit Hold'em by Jennifer Harman.
(Limit) Omaha Eight or Better by Bobby Baldwin.
Seven Card Stud High-Low Split Eight or Better by Todd Brunson.
Pot Limit Omaha High by Lyle Berman.
(Limit) 2-7 Triple Draw by Daniel Negreanu.
No Limit Hold'em by Doyle Brunson.

And further more the SS2 is slightly edited for readability. :)
